Pomegranate with Five Seeds

Chapter Twelve: Ride the Wave

Mark Kirsch March 20, 2026

Not much has happened in the last week. And that’s okay. I did have a piece accepted by the Jamestown Artscape jurors, and that’s cool. Artscape is an annual civic beautification and arts celebration project. Fifty-six 18x40 inch banners are produced, each sponsored by a local business or organization, featuring the work of local artists. They hang throughout the summer tourist season on lampposts in the core downtown area. It’s fun to be a part of, and it’s become a much larger challenge to be accepted. This year there were 327 submissions.

P and I drove to Erie this week to pick up some work I had hanging in a salon show last month. A quirky place called the City Gallery. It’s one of those long, thin city spaces. You can’t see from front to back, but you can practically touch both side walls at the same time. It’s exactly what it should be, super cool owners, walls full of insider and outsider art, and a jazz-brunch every Sunday. As a plus, it sits directly adjacent to the railroad overpass. You can’t not like it.

For the first time since I began making my current still life images, all the chambers are empty. There’s nothing in the pipeline. I made another two-piece transfer, of the Sumo Citrus image. It’s the current titleholder of “Best piece ever”. The actual photo happened quickly, and in the post-production it really took on a life of its own. But the transfer itself was a disappointment. Its dark and way too moody, and it looks cramped with a frame around it. So, it’s back to the shop for a cut and color, and possibly some extensions. I really think this one is special, but truthfully, I feel that way about all of them. This entire process has been incredibly organic. No artistic angst, very little second-guessing, and so far, just this one hiccup.

In the coming days I’ll be revamping the website, so in all likelihood that will use much of my creative juice for a brief bit. I’m also looking at other possible subject matter for the next round of images, up to now it’s been pretty much flowers and fruit. I’ve been playing around with some ideas, not still life but related still to the current run. But I’m not ready to break from my path quite yet though, there’s a lot left to explore. Who knows, I might even buy a new bowl…
